Today’s article brings to your attention a new author –
Richard Kadrey; the novel I am writing about – Sandman Slim
is an urban fantasy. Even though it’s not my top preference,
urban fantasy is nevertheless a type of literature that I really
Basically, urban fantasy is a type of fantasy whose action takes
place on the present day Earth. Because of this particularity, the
fantastic characters have to dissimulate and hide their appearance
and / or powers in order to integrate in the society.
To some of the readers the fantasy genre appeals because of its
contrast with everyday life; we would like to have some magic in our
life, and the novels, movies or games based on magic are generally
well received. Well, those fantasy fans will love the urban type;
besides the obvious perks of the “normal” fantasy, the
urban genre also offers the illusion that fantastical beings and
events are actually taking place among us, today. If you consider the
fact that in almost all such novels, at least one of the important
characters is or was a regular person, you will understand that most
of us tend to identify with that character and think that such
adventures might one day happen to us; to read such a novel is like
reading about some dude winning the lottery or marrying in the royal
Coming back to today’s title, Sandman Slim is a
character centered novel, even though that character is not the usual
hero type; James Butler Hickok Stark, alias Sandman Slim is not the
kind of guy that a girl wants to introduce to her parents. A young
magician, he was sent to Hell by the leader of his own magic circle,
being duped to participate in a dark ritual; after eleven years spent
in Hell as a pit fighter and sometimes assassin, Stark manages to
come back to L.A. for revenge.
The first time I read the book, my mind went to Ghost Rider and la
Nicholas Cage; however, the novel is original, and the author manages
to escape mannerism throughout the series.
The fight between Stark alias Sandman Slim and Mason (the one who
sent him to Hell) escalates and will have implications for the entire
Creation; unfolding on several planes of existence this fight will
not end in this novel; for that, the reader has to go through the
next book as well.
Without going further, I recommend you to read Sandman Slim by
Richard Kadrey, an urban fantasy, with a horror theme written with a
lot of humor.
